The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the essential public health measures to contain the spread of the virus, have resulted in the largest monthly increase in unemployment in the history of the State during March 2020.

Since the implementation of public health measures requiring the closure of all non-essential businesses, approximately 591,000 people have been laid-off and are in receipt of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) support, administered by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP).
