Establishment of Technological University for South East in 2022

2 November 2021

On behalf of the South East Regional Skills Forum I welcome the announcement from Minister Harris that the Technological University will be established early next year.  The new technological university has the potential to make a tremendous contribution to the region’s socio-economic development by building upon the capabilities that exist within both IT Carlow and Waterford Institute of Technology. In particular it will help attract enterprise into the region and retain a greater share of the region’s young people to study and remain within the region. When companies and third level institutions work together, they become a powerful engine for innovation and economic growth.

With additional investment the technological university can provide world class education and training and support for innovation in key disciplines including engineering, life sciences, ICT, business and hospitality. This is also very timely announcement as the region, and indeed the country, strives to meet the enormous challenges of transitioning to a low carbon economy while remaining competitive internationally.’
