Every year, since 2006, The Innovation Hub at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in Mayo has hosted a ‘Spirit of Entrepreneurship’ event. This year (its 14th year) is a collaborative event and is being run in association with the GMIT Innovation Hubs through the EMPOWER Programme.

The EMPOWER Programme is a free female entrepreneurship programme which is delivered GMIT Innovation Hubs in the Connacht-Ulster Alliance (CUA) of GMIT, IT Sligo and Letterkenny IT. It aims to fast track female-led businesses based in the West and North West of Ireland by addressing specific challenges hindering their development.

The programme has two parts:
  1. EMPOWER START for early stage ideas or businesses less than 18 months old
  2. EMPOWER GROWTH for females in business for two years or more. The programme is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Social Fund as part of the Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning 2014-2020.
As well as celebrating entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity, the events are also used as a stage to inspire and encourage people from all walks of life, to help them to pursue their own business ideas. Over the years the event has grown from hosting a small number of attendees to several hundred, and it has become an important platform for our audience to gain valuable insight by listening to those who are successfully established in business. In 2020, EMPOWER EXPLORE was run online due to Covid restrictions. This year the event will also be delivered online in response to government guidelines.
